BEFORE E.L. JAMES – ELINOR GLYN, CREATOR OF THE “IT” GIRL AND SAUCY SEXUALITY IN THE MODERN NOVEL

May 18, 2013 by Vickie Lester

She pioneered risqué and sometimes erotic romantic fiction aimed at a female readership which was radical for its time, though her writing would not be considered scandalous by modern standards. She coined the use of It, which is repeatedly yet erroneously described as a euphemism for sexuality, or sex appeal. She wrote magazine articles for the Hearst press giving advice on how to keep your man and health and beauty tips. ‘The Elinor Glyn System of Writing’ (1922) gives insights […]

TONY CURTIS ON CROSS-DRESSING – SOME LIKE IT HOT

May 17, 2013 by Vickie Lester

Tony Curtis — Orry-Kelly did the dresses for Marilyn Monroe, and Jack and I were going to wear clothes out of Western Costumes. So I went to Western Costumes and they fitted us out in these dresses that belonged to Loretta Young and Kate Smith and Debbie Reynolds and Lola Momez, they took  all our measurements… and none of them fit. They all puckered tight up and I didn’t like them, I didn’t like the idea that these women had […]

JACK LEMMON REGARDING MARILYN MONROE – SOME LIKE IT HOT

May 17, 2013 by Vickie Lester

On Marilyn Monroe: Jack Lemmon — I liked her very much and I got along great with her. She had a lot of problems, she was basically an unhappy girl. She drove Billy and Tony crazy, she drove me a little crazy too but I didn’t let on and it didn’t bother me as much as it bothered them, and it was almost always the same thing: the lateness. She had a problem, God knows what it was. (She just […]

BEACHWOOD CANYON

May 16, 2013 by Vickie Lester

1924, two ladies ride the steam shovel while Beachwood Canyon undergoes development: Now, when I used to hike with friends from back east I had a set route, across the canyon to Wolf’s Lair, then down the path behind it to Lake Hollywood and then out onto Mulholland’s dam where we would lean over the side to see the rank of sculpted bears heads peering out over Deep Dell. Often my guests would inquire as to the heady scent on […]

LLOYD WRIGHT – ARCHITECT

May 16, 2013 by Vickie Lester

Three generations: This house was designed by Lloyd Wright for Louis Samuel, who went from meeting Ramon Novarro in dance class to becoming the star’s personal assistant and then manager. On finding Samuel was embezzling from him Novarro didn’t press charges, but did take possession of this beautiful home. The interior by Lloyd Wright: Ramon Novarro enjoying his new swimming pool: A beautiful house I used to walk by every time I had an out of town guest, as I […]

FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT

May 16, 2013 by Vickie Lester

Hello kittens, I thought I’d show you this – La Miniatura – draped off in tarps against the weather. Talk about maintenance! The house was originally commissioned by a rare book dealer… Paper… Water… Paper… Anything wrong here? As a follow up to the previous post (in a round about kind of way) I quote my uncle, “Frank Lloyd Wright, great designer, piss poor engineer.” Okay, okay, okay. A phenomenal designer, built in 1923 photographed in 1939: .

THE DATE PART IV – OR, BE MY BABY – BY GEORGE KAPLAN

May 15, 2013 by Vickie Lester

THE DATE PART IV; OR, BE MY BABY Rhodes Cardell appeared, more or less, his usual self. He was working on a shoot which involved copious part-concealed nudity, and numerous insouciant and cheeky requests of the “would you mind pointing your delicious decolletage a little more to the right, Alyssa” variety spilled from his lips with their usual pep and vulgar charm. All the better to put the models (most of whom were entirely relaxed with nudity anyway) at their […]
