MAURICE CHEVALIER’S BIRTHDAY ON A MOVIE SET

May 17, 2013 by Vickie Lester

What can I say? I’ll restrain myself and just remark that this was taken on the set of the movie, “Can Can” in 1959. The cake is in celebration of Maurice Chevalier’s seventy-first birthday.

THE DATE PART III – BY GEORGE KAPLAN

May 8, 2013 by Vickie Lester

THE DATE PART III; OR, I’M DANCING AS FAST AS I CAN A date with Isabella Arden! Rhodes Cardell’s mask of insouciant cool cracked, and the face of Will Makepeace could be glimpsed beneath. The same face, but also not. Rhodes’s expression on hearing Isabella affirm that she would, wonder of wonders, like to go out with him was not one that was to be seen in any publicity photos or even his self-portraiture, no, this was a rare sighting […]

HOWARD HAWKS – GENTLEMEN PREFER BLONDES – 1953

May 7, 2013 by Vickie Lester

“I’m a storyteller – that’s the chief function of a director. And they’re moving pictures, let’s make ‘em move!” Howard Hawks “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” (based on the novel by Anita Loos) has been called Hawks’ only female “buddy picture”. Howard Hawks on the set of “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes” with Marilyn Monroe. Howard Hawks with Dee Hartford, who was to become the third Mrs. Hawks (a brunette), after completing “Gentlemen Prefer Blondes”.

THE DATE PART II – BY GEORGE KAPLAN

May 5, 2013 by Vickie Lester

Photograph by Herb Ritts . THE DATE PART II – BY GEORGE KAPLAN . Rhodes Cardell was used to being around women, *lots* of women; often in varying states of undress. He was, he pretended, inured to female nudity, not an eyelid did he bat at an undraped feminine form parading before his camera’s eye, any more than he did at *masculine* nakedness. In truth, that was part of his – carefully manufactured, or at least manicured – mystique. The […]

CLAUDETTE COLBERT AND THE MAGIC OF CINEMA – BY GEORGE KAPLAN

April 29, 2013 by Vickie Lester

Claudette Colbert & The Magic of Cinema There are some actresses whose names you don’t hear much anymore. It’s something to do with the passing of time; some stars are well-remembered, others, though they may have been as good if not better, are relatively little remarked-upon. So, let’s talk about one of them, the glorious Claudette Colbert. For over a decade in the thirties and forties Claudette was a great star, often good in dramatic roles but  luminously wonderful in […]

DARK THOUGHTS WITH VICKIE LESTER

April 20, 2013 by Vickie Lester

This is a very disturbing picture. The wondrous beauty, Ann-Margret, has birds in her hair. Now, I know they’re fake – but, really, birds? My mom had boxes of these things in the sixties and when everybody else had a Christmas tree strewn with tinsel and shining glass trinkets our tree looked like an aviary. It didn’t sparkle, it was wired full of synthetic animals. Am I still bitter? Well, I guess I am. Ten guesses what the holiday season […]
