A series of posts for Ms. S.V.G., a friendly follower of our FB page. Sarah wanted more Garbo and here she is – what struck me about these designs (by the head costume designer at MGM – Adrian) was the drama and the way most of the garments drew attention to, or framed, Garbo’s face:

A brief note about Adrian, he was openly gay in Hollywood at at time when that was extremely difficult. Bearing that in mind, he had a devoted and long marriage to Janet Gaynor.

I love Garbo, but that first picture does make her look like she’s rolled up in a large taco or ding dong. 🙂

I was trying to figure out what that fur cape was made of… Maybe white ermine, but what’s the striped stuff?

It’s the eyebrows, the arch isn’t as severely defined — and her hair is a few shades darker.

Great wardrobe — but the film doesn’t hold up as well as some of the others of this era, like “Flesh and the Devil”.
