MODERNISM AND NO.5 ~ Chanel No.5 | SCENTS MEMORY

The sweep of history, the allure of love, and the spark of humor – all in one package. This is what Lanier does so well. And, thank you Mr. Smith for introducing me to the magic. A re-post to delight on a Sunday morning. Je suis enchantée de faire votre connaissance!

Martine Belfort, nearly asleep as she soaked in her tub, barely opened one eye at the offensive jangling urgency of the contraption on her vanity. Why she ever had installed a telephone in her bathroom escaped her for the moment.

“Juju hold it up to my ear.”

The maid did as she was told.

“Allo? Allo Martine are you there?” It was Cecile Duvall her dearest source of gossip and most distrusted friend.

“Cecile? Are you back in Paris already? I thought you were in Cannes?”

“I am ma chère but I simply had to call you at once. The most amazing thing happened tonight at dinner.”

Martine closed her eyes and sank to her chin in the tub and nodded to Juju to turn on the hot tap to warm her up.

“Oh do tell, who is your infatuation this time, a duke or some American millionaire?”

“It is Coco Chanel!”

Martine shot up in the tub both eyes wide open. “You are having an affair with Chanel?”

“No no! Silly pet, I have news about her.”

“Oh I never liked that woman! What happened? Did she stay out in the sun too long and burned to a crisp? Is she dead?”

following already. I truly am a perfume connoisseur and have interviewed amazing “noses” like cartier’s mathilde laurent, or great perfume creators such as kilian hennessy; but see perfumes, by now, as pure art (as you might’ve noticed, I’m on the quest for toxin-free guilty pleasures, and perfumes are really a black box of surprising compounds)

I just got a book called “The Perfume Lover” by Denise Beaulieu — a memoir of scent and the creation of a perfume by L’Artisan’s Duchaufour based on an evening in Seville. Toxin free, have you tried The 7 Virtues Perfumes?

If you haven’t yet, read J-C Ellena’s book, it’s like a short diary really, but so, so enchanting and sweet and relaxing, reminded me of Capote’s travel memoirs. Don’t ask why, just the quiet atmosphere plus crisp and to the point writing.

7 virtues, I read about them, but 7 Virtues isn’t available in Germany :/
Oh, I see I right now I can place an order via email. That’s new.
Thanks Vickie for bringing up! 😀

Thank you and I’ll look for JC Ellena’s book.

I always enjoy everything Lanier writes. He’s brilliant. Lucky us!! 🙂

Is there a storm heading your way? Batten down the hatches!

Re: Lanier, I’m after him to write a book as well 😉

      • June 12, 2013

Our weather has been so strange. I’ve never seen anything like it. One day it’s hot as Hades and the next it’s cold and stormy. I’m either turning the air conditioning on or bundled in sweaters and switching the thermostat to heat! It feels biblical.haha!

Why Lanier hasn’t written a book or screenplay is beyond me. Seriously. What’s he waiting for??

      • June 12, 2013

I read there might be tornadoes heading your way! Stay safe!
