As I am lurking around the house I realized that the original ending for Suspicion that Hitchcock intended was for Joan to slug down that poisoned glass with full knowledge of its contents, but not before she’d penned a letter to her mother explaining all, which Cary puts in the post after the dastardly deed…

Now that would have taken things to an entirely new level.
Perhaps one to which even Mr Hitchcock was not prepared (or allowed?) to go.

Picking up on the discussion with The Perfumed Dandy… Every time I see “Suspicion” I get really annoyed with the ending Hitchcock was forced to do. (Apparently the studio thought the public would never accept Cary Grant as the murderer.) That stupid ending weakens the whole movie! It would have been sooo much better with the original script.
Vickie, yep as soon as I saw this post I thought of the original ending which would have been a doozy! As it is, the ending makes Joan look like the stereotypical silly hysterical woman even tho’ Johnnie has been acting *suspiciously* (see what I did there?!) throughout! The publicity still above is tres amusing. 🙂

Well if you will spend too long lurking in the ‘real crime section’ I guess your really asking for it, no?

In 1940-1941 he probably wasn’t allowed…

It’s that Mrs Danvers again!
Johnnie Aysgarth: If you’re going to kill someone, do it simply.

And, that scene with the light shining from the glass of milk is so diminished.
