Let us not be afraid to help each other—let us never forget that government is ourselves and not an alien power over us. The ultimate rulers of our democracy are not a President and Senators and Congressmen and Government officials but the voters of this country.
What a phenomenal quote V. I was raised believing that but it really seems to have been largely forgotten. One thing that I do appreciate in France is that people are more directly involved and when they don’t like something, they take to the streets to protest.
Perfect quote for today. I think that American voters would do well to remember that. And perhaps the shutdown will be enough to remind them.

My favourite of all the presidential monuments on my recent visit to Washington was that to FDR (and Eleanor). A biography in stone it is emblazoned everywhere with his extraordinary words, as pertinent now as they ever were on every issue from democracy to poverty and war.

Our Government and Government officials (talking about my own country!) seem to forget this much too often. In years gone, every Government letter was signed “Your humble servant”!
Or maybe it was “obedient”?
