    Dearest V (and G)
My copy must be somewhere in our weather beaten postal system… I am waiting on its arrival with anticipation but without stress.
    Already practising my inner poise.
    Yours ever

You are so sweet to post this about loving a scar. Elizabeth was very proud of hers and refused to have it minimized with plastic surgery. Do you know the story about Elizabeth’s scar and John Wayne? ….

No! What is the story, please?

      • February 16, 2014

Well, Elizabeth was recuperating in the London hospital from her near fatal bout of pneumonia and the tracheotomy was not yet sewn up to heal (I have forgotten why they had to keep it open) so to be able to speak she had to put a silver coin over the hole. John Wayne came to visit her and they had a nice time visiting. Elizabeth had a sometime irreverent sense of humor and she ask him if he wanted to see something funny. He said sure!. She took the coin off her throat and blew air through the inch long hole. Big tough John Wayne went white as a sheet and nearly fainted. Elizabeth loved to tell that story.
