Poor Bette! At the time, everyone knew why she wore that glitzy skullcap to the Academy Awards. Now, people look at the photos and think it is because she had some unexplainable eccentric moment. She partially shaved her head for her role as Queen Elizabeth I in “The Virgin Queen,” which was being filmed in March 1955 when the Oscars were held. She wore this thing in order to cover her then-hairless state. She probably could have chosen something prettier, but there was a reason for her seemingly off-the-wall head covering!
Yep, it was for a role. How very Bette! Sometimes the simplest explanation is the answer. 🙂 She actually shaved her head for a very specific scene in “The Virgin Queen.”
Was Bette auditioning to be a munchkin?
