I remember the first time that I saw this photo I did a double take! That is Charlie Chaplin? And I understood that is who he truly was and that the shadow on the wall behind him, looming large was the silhouette of his created character and his fame. It is an exceptional photograph. I don’t think that anyone captured him as well, save maybe Avedon (http://www.antiqbook.com/boox/lop/017958.shtml) .

It’s an entire life in a single image — exactly!

    Dearest V
What an handsome man Charles Chaplin was.
A well developed body and toned mind, not to mention a sure, steady sort of face.
His treatment, it goes without saying, was nothing short of a disgrace.

Am I the only one who finds Chaplin, with his smile and the lighting and such being the way it is, slightly demonic looking in this photograph?

      A diabolical genius? Hm…

Well, he certainly is/was a genius. He’s slightly frightening in this picture, though, but maybe that’s just me. It IS a good picture.

I went back to study the picture, I think it’s his expression, looking up from under his brows, with a kind of wild grin, and that huge shadow looming behind… Well spotted!

Exactly! Glad to know someone else could see it, too.
