When I was a kid living my 7 years in Hell in the armpit of California known as Fontana (Not a fountain in the entire town. Only chicken ranches and Kaiser Steel…chicken poop with the morning breezes and sulphur fumes from the mill in the late afternoon.) we belonged to the Fontana Southern Baptist Church. One of the members of the church was none other than Miss Jane Russell’s sister. (Or maybe it was a cousin…it was a long time ago) Every Saturday night when I said my bedtime prayers I asked God to please, PLEASE let tomorrow be the Sunday that Jane Russell came to church. I had it all planned…. I was gonna rush the pulpit when she came in and sing “We’re Just Two Little Girls From Little Rock.” and she would join me up there and we would bring down the house! It never happened.
God had other plans and was saving my embarrassment for when I would meet Jane Fonda.

She was quite the bombshell – which I find interesting considering how conservative she was late in her life. I saw that movie again recently and I’d forgotten how subtly risque it was, and sometimes not so subtly. And, talk about eye candy… Sometimes I like to watch even horrible old Technicolor films just for the bold colors – with the sound turned down, of course.

Some women are Women, some women are Ladies, but Jane Russell at her peak was a Dame, and a helluva one!
She became conservative in later life, did she?! Zzzzzz. Shame! I saw her in a programme with the critic Mark Cousins and she was still smart as a Whip! Gentlemen Prefer Blondes is such a fantastically entertaining movie! Marilyn and Jane, two delicious contrasting flavors that went well together. Ahem. Bless Lanier for mentioning Two Little Girls From Little Rock when this was originally posted! 🙂 Oh, and Ms Russell was fun in Son of Paleface too.
Jane was AMAZING! This picture is actually a publicity picture from her film THE REVOLT OF MAMIE STOVER (1956) in which she played a dance hall girl (aka prostitute). That’s actually a wig she’s wearing, folks! Her character in film started out as a brunette and then when she became a dance hall girl she died it red, “it sells lot’s more tickets. They’ve been calling me flaming Mamie!” Also this picture of Jane has been reversed, her mole was ALWAYS on her left side, never right and her hair was parted on the left as well.
