I worked in the same company with Renee Asherson in the late 70s. We were doing three plays in rep. Alas, I wasn’t in the one that she was in but I’ve never forgotten having a conversation with her about a robbery she’d just had in which many of the items relating to Donat had been stolen. Heartbreaking.
Oh-my-god. That’s got to be one of the top 3 best pictures you’ve ever posted. He’s divine. Btw have you ever read that book, I Look Divine? You should if you haven’t, it’s a good match with your writing style.
I’ve been looking at my own glamorous pictures of yesteryear, wondering how long I’ll last, what the future will bring- if I’ll die alone, or if I’ll have a Bernard Lafferty holding my hand whilst cutting off the oxygen and taking my watch off my wrist with his feet 🙂 I suppose I’ll just have to wait and see- and feign surprise!
“I Look Divine” is now in my queue, thank you so very much.
As to glamour, in you I think it’s innate, and If I’m allowed to hazard a guess about your future I would say; full of love, and joy, and enough sass to run circles around any Lafferty.
Thank you for this and all your wonderful photographs and posts! I love how his expression, of a bit of wariness, perfectly matches the quote. And it makes you wonder, is false security, which you can see right through, better than no security at all?

You are so welcome! That is quite the question…maybe security tempered with awareness, which is hard to attain when wrestling (and I do mean wrestling) with stardom. xox, V

Apart from anything else, The Magic Box is a thoroughly charming and touching picture. Few actors are as innately likeable as Robert Donat. He’s like the anti-Marky Mark Wahlberg/Russell Crowe/James Woods! Oh, look out for a cameo by an extremely famous actor as a policeman…
I had every intention of watching it last night, and then I got caught up in a book which I am pages away from finishing. So I must ask you this, who is in the cameo?!?

It is someone you featured mere days ago… Laurence Olivier!
Wow, that’s a great quote. I’d borrow it for my novel if it weren’t finished.
Hey! Congratulations!

I’ve never seen the film they met on, The Magic Box, something I will remedy in a moment. How incandescent is she?

Sublimely so.
Robert Donat was a splendid actor, and he seemed a pleasant and gentle man. He died much too young.
A wonderful film presence, and a terrible loss at 53.

Now I HAVE to see it, thank you!
It’s a fun moment!
