My first day at MGM…and a queen is always a queen… Zsa Zsa

“My first day at MGM dawned… First I was dispatched to makeup—only to find myself sitting at a long table, in front of an even longer mirror. Next to me sat Ava Gardner, Elizabeth Taylor, Lana Turner, and Grace Kelly. I soon found out that the modus operandi at the studio was for actresses to apply their own lipstick, on the premise that no one, not even the world’s leading makeup artist, is capable of applying a woman’s lipstick the way she can apply it herself…

On that first day, just as I  was about to embark on the lipstick process, Ava Gardner (who I liked immediately), leaned over conspiratorially and said, “Sydney will make his entrance any minute.” Sydney was Sydney Guilaroff, the legendary hair designer, who swept into the makeup room a moment later, glanced at the collection of world-famous Hollywood stars, and contemptuously commanded, “Girls! Put your lipstick on! I don’t fix up dogs! I adored him instantly, and still do.”
