“Just take a breath,” said Shamari, dipping a hand into her Prada bag, her entire arm like a dowser’s wand dragged toward a source of water. There appeared an expression of almost religious fervor as she found what she sought in its capacious depths. After a moment she withdrew her hand and produced, with a flourish, a shining tube of lipstick and proffered it; “This should look good on you. Here.” Anne, more than a little perplexed, accepted the peculiar offering. Lipstick as panacea… She took the lipstick and applied a coat to her lips. Shamari watched Anne with an approving nod. “That’s better.” Shamari wore some designer outfit in black and stood with chin raised and shoulders back. She possessed an adamantine focus, not in the sense that her personality sparkled and gleamed but in that she was cold and hard and so sharp-edged she could slice through glass. Wary of Shamari’s intense attention, Anne asked, “How do you get through these things?”

      This weekend it’s lip balm for me…everything near my nose and mouth is chapped, aftermath of a mild case of influenza and fever.

      My mom never went out without her lipstick on, I think it was a generational thing…she would have been 92 this month!
