This is what Hollywood looked like at the turn of the 20th century:
In 1903 a small place built by H.J. Whitley (Whitley Heights is where the silent film stars lived) called the Hollywood Hotel looked like this:
Soon after this picture was taken a wealthy woman from Iowa, Almira Hershey, came to Hollywood for the pleasant weather and stayed at the hotel. So enchanted was she that she bought out Whitley and expanded:
