So sad. Carole is marvellous in To Be Or Not to Be, such a great movie and marvellous cast. Ms Lombard seemed to become better and more appealing with the years, I wonder what she’d have done or been allowed to do if she’d lived. Reading of her fate and how she was found is so devastating as is Gable’s reaction to it. Just one of many tragedies of course, but because she is someone you know and admire from the screen (and glancingly from accounts of her real self) it brings this particular tragedy home. (Ah, well, I have a talent for spouting what may be sentimental drivel) She lives still immortal in the movies (even the not so good ones, which she usually lifts with spikiness.
I’m trying to think if that was her only film with Lubitsch?
Yes, unfortunately. This may be apocryphal, but I read that Ms Lombard wanted Lubitsch to direct an earlier movie, Love Among the Ruins, supposedly she said (I’m paraphrasing) “Look let’s do this thing, and if it’s a hit you can have me”, Ernst considered this playing with the cigar in his mouth, then Carole took it from him saying “But if it stinks I get to shove this little black thing up your ass!”. I may be a sucker for (mis)quoting that as truth.
