I met Barbra Streisand in August of 1960 a few hours after I arrived in New York from Los Angeles. My first apartment was in Greenwich Village at 16 Gay Street next door to the basement apartment made famous by Ruth McKenney in her memoir, “My Sister Eileen” which was made into a movie and the musical, “Wonderful Town”.

Everything was new and happening in New York – the Peppermint Lounge was a somewhat seedy Times Square area bar that popularized The Twist, the dance that changed forever social dancing and when it attracted members of the Kennedy family, the club became world famous and the whole idea of Society changed; Uptown and Downtown merged.
