In an era of breadlines, Depression, and wars, I tried to help people get away from all the misery; to turn their minds to something else. I wanted to make people happy, if only for an hour. Busby Berkeley
He sure made me happy. I still remember the first time I saw that number “Lullaby Of Broadway” with all those dancers. I was only nine but it blew me off the couch and out the door and half way down the street. When I came too, I suddenly and miraculously knew how to tap and I tap danced all the way back home.
My dad always told me James Cagney was really (as he said) a hoofer and one of the best dancers in Hollywood — who was famous for his gangster roles. I never researched it to find out if it was true — I just took it as gospel.
